He made his stage debut in 1956 in the West End production of The Barretts of Wimpole Street. He then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared with them on tour until 1960. During this time he also worked in television and film.

His screen debut was in 1958's The Raven starring Anthony Quinn and Peter Finch. He was to make over 50 films throughout his career including The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), Scum (1970), The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972), Black Sunday (1977) and Aces High (1978). His final film was 1982's Gladiator with Laurence Olivier, Joanne Whalley and Max von Sydow.
